Stationary Steam Engines

Along with my love of trains is a love for anything steam powered. In addition to collecting trains, I have also collected a few live model stationary steam engines.

Jensen #25

This engine was manufactured by Jensen Manufacturing Company in Pennsylvania. It is their most powerful production hobby model. It has a double acting piston and a reverse gear for changing direction of the flywheel. It has an electric boiler so you don't have to mess around with fuel tablets. I received this engine when I was in junior high as a Christmas gift from my parents and grandparents.

Jensen #60

This is an oscillating single action piston engine. It is powered by fuel tablets and while not the strongest it was able to power the Ferris wheel I had hooked the #25 to. I found this engine never used at a garage sale for $50. A steal that I could not pass up.

Fuel Tablets

Picture
My Jensen #60 requires fuel tablets to run. When you buy one you will get a pack of 20 Esbit tablets. Each time you fire the boiler, you need two tablets so you get 10 runs with one pack. These work great, but a new pack cost around $6-$8.

I discovered you can also use Coghlan's Fuel Tablets. They are cheaper. A 24 pack cost around $2-$4. You have to cut them in half to make them fit on the fuel tray, but they work almost as good as the Esbit tablets. I find that you need three halves to get the same amount of heat as two Esbit tablets. This means you get 16 runs out of one pack.
